Our June 17th, 2023 celebration at South Park brought the community together for a parade, vendors, and an unforgettable headlining performance by Grammy-nominated artist Macy Gray. From drumlines and cheerleaders to food stands and family activities, the day was a joyful reminder of why Juneteenth matters in Lawrence.

History of Juneteenth
On “Freedom’s Eve,” the night of January 1, 1863, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and homes across the country for the first Watch Night services, and at the stroke of midnight their prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free.
